Carmen Vanido is a minor character in the Spooky Month series.

She is the mother of Roy. A wealthy woman who carries herself rather aristocratically, she and her husband Richard are shown to be rather controlling/coddling of their son, disapproving of him dressing stereotypically cool or hanging out with "plebeians" like Ross and Robert, his two best friends, as well as buying him massive amounts of candy on Halloween/Spooky Month.

She is voiced by Elsie Lovelock, who also voices Lila.

Biography

Spooky Month 5 - Tender Treats

Carmen enters the CandyClub, shooing away two children which Kevin saw and gives her a look.  As Carmen looks around the store and makes her way to the counter, Kevin asked “what would you like, ma’am?" to which she shoos him away to and sneers back with a “not you.” As Carmen continues to look around, she flicks her hair back and orders “one of everything [in the store], and double it.” When Kevin asks Rick to help, Carmen snaps her fingers and demands them to hurry up, causing the two to look at her in disbelief and annoyance. She leaves the store with the candy bag in hand, walking towards a parked car.

Carmen doesn’t appear again until the later half of the episode when she and Richard find Roy with his friends.  When she leaves the car, she is appalled at Roy's costume. As she asks what it is, Roy answers that he is a rapper, making Carmen scoff, replying he could've chosen something more elegant, like a vampire. She demands Roy to enter the car and proclaims that he should not be around "plebians" such as Ross and Robert. When she enters the car, Roy asks if he can at least say bye. Carmen deeply sighs and answers with yes.

Spooky Short - Kevin's Dream Job

Carmen makes an extremely brief appearance during the flashback montage in Kevin's Dream Job. It is a recap of the events occurred in Tender Treats, with a bonus scene of Carmen buying the candy with a black credit card and making Rick carry the bag to the car.

Appearance

Carmen is a character in the Spooky Month series who is depicted as a poised and elegant woman, seemingly in her mid-30s. She has long, reddish-auburn hair that cascades over her shoulders and reaches down to her mid-back, styled loosely. She has a very curvaceous figure, noticably, a very large posterior.

Her attire typically consists of a rosewood-colored dress with a fitted design, featuring a diagonal hemline that extends to her knees. She accessorizes with a gold plastron necklace adorned with a central white gemstone, and completes her outfit with black high heels.

Personality

Carmen seems to be very arrogant and rude, as she sees herself as superior to people, whether it be adults or children alike. It’s likely that she comes from a rich family as she makes a fuss about being elegant towards Roy, saying he could've been a vampire rather than a rapper. She then calls Roy's friends Robert and Ross "plebeians" and doesn’t want him to hang out with his friends, showing that she is elitistic as well.

She also appears to be snobbish as she dismisses Kevin for asking what she would like in the store, assuming he was flirting with her and rather harshly sneering "Not you!". This too can also be seen as her being a little bit “extra” since she says "give me one of everything, and double it" instead of the common "two of everything."

Despite this, Carmen does at least care about her son, as the candy she brought at the store was for him.

Trivia

• As of Hollow Sorrows, Carmen is the tallest female character, followed by Lila.
• Like some of the women in Spooky Month, Carmen also follows a coloured theme with her name and colour palette: red.
  • While the name itself has meanings that is unrelated to red, (such as verse/song/poem in Latin), it's possible that Carmen was based on the Spanish word "carmesí" OR the French word "carmin/carmine", both meaning crimson (or a darker red).
• Sr Pelo confirmed on Tumblr that Carmen's last name is Vanido.
  • Presumably, Vanido is based on the Spanish word "vanidoso" which means "vain person".
• The gem on Carmen's necklace is white however in some shots (notably when she's outside at night), it appears as a bright blue colour. Whether this is a colouring mistake or on purpose is unknown.
  • It's important to note that the blue colour of the gem is different from the cult amulet's cyan and Sr Pelo has acknowledged this, also stating that the golden colour is the same due to limited palette.
• In her early artwork, Carmen was shown wearing matching gold bracelets on both wrists. However, these are likely removed from her official design as they were not present during her on-screen appearance in the episode Tender Treats, nor in future artwork.
• It's unknown if she or her husband are aware of the possible sexual abuse Roy's uncle is implied to put him through, or that he was possibly connected to both The Eyes of the Universe and the mysterious cult implied to worship it, or that he's even dead as of The Stars. It's either they weren't aware and didn't care, weren't very fond of him to begin with and thus didn't care that he died, or were very aware of both and are either involved with the cult themselves or aren't at all and have (unspokenly) cracked down on their strictness on Roy to better protect him.
• Due to Ross and Roy being friends, Carmen is acquainted with Jaune but on unpleasant terms as Carmen goes as far to insult Jaune's outfit and socioeconomic status.  However, it's possible for the two to be friendly.
• Carmen was originally designed to be shorter than Richard but was changed to be taller than him.
• In Kevin's Dream Job, Carmen can be seen with a black credit card. A black credit card is reserved for individuals with a high net-worth or is a high-spender, which confirms her family's wealthy background.
• In a Spooky Month fan server, Sr Pelo has stated in a Q&A:
  • Carmen's job would be in the business field or "head office" like. However, this is likely to change as he hasn't thought about it yet OR has changed to her being unoccupied (see below).
  • Carmen has the studies to be an accountant but "she likes to live life like a queen". If her family was struggling, she would look for a job. This has an implication that Carmen does not currently work however nothing is confirmed.
  • Carmen would enjoy watching TV or planning to go out with her family.
  • Carmen wouldn't lie to create drama but she is judgemental.
  • Carmen is aware that Ross is Jaune's son but does not hate Ross.
  • Carmen and Richard are aware of Roy's misconducts and hate it.
  • Carmen does not know about Roy's treatment of Skid and Pump.
