“Y'ALL DON'T KNOW ANYTHING! You can't escape from me... I'LL FOLLOW YOU UNTIL YOU ARE DEA—”
― Bob Velseb, Spooky Month 5 - Tender Treats
“Did you know that if you eat a human brain, you'll get a disease similar to mad cow?”
― One of Bob's cannibalistic facts featuring his catchphrase
Bob Velseb, also known as his alias The Devil, was a cannibalistic serial killer who first appeared in It’s spooky month, and later returns as the main antagonist of Spooky Month - Tender Treats. He wears a costume that looks like a Red Demon.
History[]
Before Spooky Month[]
Bob Velseb worked at the restaurant Boys & Grills as a chef, as seen in a photo Lila shows to Skid in Tender Treats. It's implied that he knew Lila and Jaune when they were children
It's Spooky Month[]
Bob first appears in It's Spooky Month, breaking into Skid and Lila's house, trying to kill Lila. His first appearance is a lot more comical than later appearances.
Spooky Month: Deadly Smiles[]
Bob's appearance is teased briefly at the end of Deadly Smiles, as his prison mugshot is shown on TV in a news broadcast.
Spooky Month: Tender Treats[]
He later returns as the main antagonist had escaped from prison three years later (after the events of Its Spooky Month), and resumes what he started by stalking Lila.
He stands outside Lila’s house smiling menacingly before he manages to enter, and continuously tries and fails to kill her throughout the episode, eventually deciding to kill Skid and Pump instead. He is eventually shot and killed by Jack and John.
Later, Lila shows Skid a picture of her and Jaune as children at a Halloween party at Boys & Grills. Bob can be seen in the background, in a chef's uniform, smiling.
Appearance[]
Bob was a tall, overweight adult man. He has a black mullet, a small amount of stubble on his chin, and a wide, toothy grin.
In Deadly Smiles, his prison mugshot shows him in a typical orange prison jumpsuit.
In the first scene of Spooky Month 5 - Tender Treats, he wore a red shirt with a black collar and sleeves along with black pants, and shoes. When murdering people, he would wear his usual attire plus a dark-red turtleneck sweater, a red devil mask with horns, and red demon gloves. Underneath his sweater, he has a belt which holds a smaller knife, a carving fork, his knife sharpener and a salt shaker. He can be seen chasing victims with his knife and knife sharpener. After Jack and John shot him, he had holes in his body.
Personality[]
Bob is a sadistic, bloodthirsty killer. He shows pleasure in taunting people through vile information. Before trying to kill his victims, he would say a food-related fact (specifically relating to meat or cannibalism).
He has a liking for candy, often momentarily being distracted from his objective to eat sweets, In It's spooky month, this is taken to the comedic extreme of preferring to take candy over killing.
Relationships[]
Lila[]
Bob seems to have known Lila at a very young age as seen from Lila's photobook, causing her to rip up the picture in fear.
Jaune[]
Bob also knows Jaune, as she is seen with Lila in the picture she tears up.
Trivia[]
- His name is a pun on Beelzebub, one of the seven princes of Hell, who represents gluttony.
- This also ties in to the fact he is a cannibal, someone whose indulgence in eating the flesh of others would fall under the sin of gluttony.
- Bob is the first antagonist to make an appearance in Spooky Month, appearing in the first 15 seconds.
- On January 2nd, he escaped the local jail with two other thieves, who were most likely Fat Thief and Thin Thief.
- Bob formally worked as a butcher and cooker at a restaurant called "Boys & Grills" before police temporarily closed it down. He had supposedly dismembered his victims and put the remains in the food he sold, or kept them to himself.
- In the visualiser for the official OST for SM5, Skid and Pump are seen eating at Boys & Grills. Bob himself can be seen in his work attire serving burgers to the two before leaving and stalking them in his demon costume for the rest of the OST video.
- In the Newgrounds post-credits of Tender Treats, Bob was revealed to have the same pendant as the Cultists, implying they worked together.
- This could explain Bob's insane durability of being able to withstand many gunshots before succumbing to death, and implies that the cultists share this ability.
- Bob's personality is based on two horror movie slashers, Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Michael Myers from Halloween.[1]
- Bob, being based on Leatherface, may also have been based on Ed Gein, a real serial killer from whom Leatherface was inspired.
- He shares a few similarities to Dead by Daylight's rendition of Ghostface. Namely, finding a victim, and then using his costume to stalk them. He also holds his knife in similar ways, swapping how he holds it depending on if he's in chase. Lastly, their costumes depict a supernatural entity in a color-coded costume (Ghostface being monochromatic and Bob being red and black). This is likely a coincidence, as the similarities end here.
- In his original concept, Bob used a classic cartoony large kitchen knife. In later installments, Sr Pelo changes this to a filleting knife that is used to clean the fat from the meat and remove the skin from the fish.[2]
- Originally, Bob would pluck his facial hair and paint himself.[3]
- His costume is never removed, not even in the morgue during the real ending. This may imply Bob is an actual demon or part-demon.
- This is supported by the fact that Pump's eyes had turned cyan near the end of the short - something that only happens in the presence of a hostile demon. Bob's eyes had also become cyan at that point as well.[1]
- In Bob's house at the beginning of Tender Treats, there are many items on the floor, including 10 bones and 6 bone fragments, a sledgehammer, an axe, bloody locking pliers, and a chainsaw.
- Bob is durable, as he survived getting ran over and got shot multiple times. This is probably due to the pendant in his chest, supposedly causing immortality.
- Bob has been drawn drinking moonshine in two separate drawings by Sr Pelo, suggesting that he may be an alcoholic.[2]
